BPO has significantly enhanced the impact performance of a chemical waste box for the Danish market, elevating its nominal load capacity to an impressive 10 kg using advanced dynamic simulations.

Craemer developed an UN-certified chemical waste bin designed for household use, capable of safely storing hazardous materials such as oil, paint, batteries, and spray cans. These materials require careful handling to prevent environmental contamination. The box needed to comply with stringent UN 4H2 certification standards. These include resistance to impact from a 1.2-meter drop at a temperature of -18°C; an extreme condition that makes the polypropylene material more brittle and presents significant engineering challenges.

The already produced box should reach a certification load of 6kg. Dynamic simulations pinpointed weak points in the design. Compounding the challenge, the mould for the box had already been manufactured, limiting the scope of potential design modifications. Despite these constraints, BPO used advanced finite element method (FEM) simulations to identify the root causes of the limitations and implement targeted optimisations. By addressing these critical areas with precision, BPO was able to increase the box’s load capacity without significant changes to the mould or excessive material use. This efficient, material-conscious approach demonstrated the power of simulation-driven design.

The final design exceeded expectations: the improved hazardous waste box was UN 4H2 certified with a maximum load of 10 kg, far surpassing the set requirement. This success underscores the effectiveness of BPO’s simulation expertise in identifying root causes, optimising designs, and delivering innovative, high-performance products. By leveraging advanced simulations, BPO ensures that its clients can meet and surpass industry standards, creating solutions that combine efficiency, reliability, and sustainability.
