The testing machine

Using FEM simulations to analyse and optimise products has been one of BPO’s core activities for years. To take our work even further, we added a tensile and compression machine to our workshop! With this tool we can physically test product designs and materials.

The application of the test machine is very diverse and proves to be useful in various phases of the product development process:

Material characterisation

Understanding material properties is essential for reliable product development. With our testing machine, we determine mechanical behaviour through standardised methods such as ISO 527-2 (tensile) and ISO 178 (flexural) tests. We also perform customised tests, like creep measurements, to understand long-term material performance under load.

  • Using ISO-compliant samples from real parts, we can:
  • Compare virgin and recycled materials
  • Assess variations between production batches

Verify supplier data and generate reliable FEM input

This provides deeper insights for better material selection, sourcing, and design optimisation.

Design optimisation

Accurate material data forms the basis for design improvements. By combining physical tests with FEM simulations, we evaluate product strength and stiffness, identify weak points, and explore optimisation options.

Possible improvements include reinforcing with ribs, adjusting wall thicknesses, or rounding sharp corners to spread loads more evenly. Comparing simulation results with physical tests delivers valuable insights, ensuring that modifications result in stronger, more efficient designs.

Performance validation

Product validation is critical during and after the design phase. With our testing machine, we confirm that products meet functional requirements and comply with standards such as ISO and DIN.

By integrating physical test data with simulations, we can confirm that products meet strength and stiffness targets, withstand real-world loads, and that design iterations achieve the intended improvements. This reduces development risks and ensures reliable performance before market launch.

Benchmarking

Benchmarking provides a clear picture of how a product performs in the market. By testing products side by side with alternatives, we generate objective comparisons that highlight strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for innovation.

These results provide quantifiable insights that help guide development decisions and sharpen product positioning.

Quality control

Consistent quality is key to product reliability. With standardised testing programmes, we monitor performance across batches and production sites. This allows us to detect deviations early, track stability over time, and assess the impact of process changes.

In addition, we validate whether products comply with required standards and specifications, ensuring they consistently meet both customer and market expectations.

Comparing the physical tests with simulations often provides new insights into the behaviour of plastic products. It is a truly valuable tool in the process of product development. Contact us to explore the possibilities!
